Youth 4 the Kingdom (Y4K) recently sent a team on a mission trip to India. There, we visited a number of believers in the state of Orissa. Besides hearing the many testimonies of how Christians were attacked and tortured by Hindu extremists, we were shocked to find out that there were only a few Bibles left.
Orissa is a state in India where more than 70,000 Christians have been displaced and forced to live in refugee camps since August 24, 2008. That is the date when a prominent Hindu leader was murdered by Maoist extremists. As a result, Hindus took their anger out on Christians. They were attacked, hundreds were killed, and many women were raped. Many of the believers have not been able to return to their villages and some continue to live in fear because of the hostility of the Hindus.
During our visit we were invited by the local pastors to hold a pastors’ conference. After the first session, we spoke with the translator. His name is Denish. He described how last year during the riots they burned his house along with everything in it, and how his children are no longer able to attend any school because their birth identifications have been destroyed. He showed us his Bible that someone sent him because his previous one had been burned. Denish shared how thousands of Christians are in this predicament and would love to have their own personal Bible.
Pastor Israel Paulose (son of Moses Paulose) told us of a group of 60 Christians he met. These individuals traveled for 3 days with no food or water and when he reached them, Israel asked “what can I get you” thinking they would ask for the obvious- food and water. They replied, “They burned our Bibles. We want Bibles. Can you get us new ones?” We realized the hunger they have for the word of God.
Even if the hostile environment is still present in Orissa the kingdom of God advances. Transportation is one of the biggest hindrances in spreading the Gospel to the over 600,000 unreached villages in India. A bicycle provides a cheap, efficient means of transportation with little maintenance costs.
For as little as $3, a Bible in the Oriya language can be purchased for a believer in Orissa.
For $60 a bicycle can be purchased for an evangelist in Orissa.
